Check Your Feet Before You Pull the Trigger

As you progress in your pickleball journey, you’ll find the speedups that used to work on the 3.5 court no longer work.

One reason why your attack might backfire is because of where you’re standing on the court. Coach Mark Price explains the concept in a new video.

When you get pulled out wide, angles open up on the court. There is a temptation to sneak a ball by your opponent and hit a winner.

But if your feet are straddling the sideline, you’re leaving way too much of the court empty. No matter how strong your attack is, all your opponent has to do is punch the ball into the open court for the winner.

A better move instead is to play an aggressive dink crosscourt.

This allows you time to get back into position after your shot
It also takes advantage of the wide angle and puts pressure on your opponent

Wait until you’re in a better position to pull the trigger. Expect your opponent to at least get a paddle on the ball at higher levels.

Use the mindset that the ball is always coming back. Make sure you’re in a good position to deal with the response.

The Lawsuits Keep Coming

Lawsuits have been the hottest topic in pickleball this summer. Between JOOLA suing USA Pickleball and a class action suit against JOOLA, there’s no way pickleball isn’t included in the mock trials in law school next semester.

The latest suit focuses on a different aspect of the game — sound. Five residents in Lonetree, Colorado, are suing the city because of the sound generated by a new set of pickleball courts.

The courts in question are at the Lone Tree Recreation Center. The group alleges that the pickleball courts’ noise is “an unreasonable noise” based on city code, which is defined as “any sound which annoys or disturbs a reasonable person of normal sensitivities” (Yes, super specific).

The state’s noise abatement statute dictates a daytime noise level of 50 decibels and a nighttime noise level of 45 decibels

Pickleball noise complaints are not a new issue. Especially in Colorado. And to be honest, six public courts right outside your back porch would get old quickly.

There’s no doubt that cities adding courts is a good thing. It’s just imperative to find the right places to add them and that noise is adequately evaluated before they are built.

Are we really four years into the growth of this sport and municipalities are still putting courts outside people's front porches? With the amount of noise complaints we've seen across cities you'd think they'd find some more isolated places for court installation.

Haworth Enjoys a PPA Breakthrough

Winning a men’s singles title has become nearly impossible on the PPA Tour. The talent pool gets deeper every week and even if you make it to a final, you’re likely to face Ben Johns or Federico Staksrud.

Haworth Goes For Gold
Chris Haworth did the impossible this weekend. He beat both Ben Johns and Federico Staksrud in back-to-back days. The former Oklahoma State tennis star rallied back after dropping the first game to Staksrud in the final. He captured his first PPA title winning the final two games, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7.

A Semifinal to Remember
Jorja and JW Johnson are one of the only teams with a mixed doubles win over Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns. They were inches from a repeat in Saturday’s semifinal. Ben and ALW fought all the way back from a 4-10 deficit in the third game to secure the win.

Anna Leigh Goes For Three
After being tested in mixed doubles, ALW left nothing to chance on Championship Sunday. She captured another triple crown, finishing it off by beating her women’s doubles partner, Catherine Parenteau, 11-6, 11-6.

New Blood in Men’s Doubles
In recent months, Pablo Tellez’s doubles prowess has been called into question. He was demoted from MLP’s Premier Level to Challenger and split with men’s doubles partner Federico Staksrud.

The doubters were silenced this weekend when Tellez and Hayden Patriquin beat the Johns Bros in the quarterfinals. They won again in the semifinals and finished the weekend with silver after falling to JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier. Frazier leaves San Clemente as the top-ranked men’s doubles player on the PPA Tour.
